Teaching Strategies, HighScope Curriculum for Preschool
The staff of Indi Kids strongly believes that successful and exciting early childhood classrooms reflect a fundamental understanding of child development and best early childhood education practices. The High Scope Curriculum helps our teachers build the comprehensive base necessary for preparing all the children of our classrooms to succeed in school. In combining current research and knowledge about early childhood programs it is able to clearly articulate the "what" and "why" of preschool teaching. Our teachers are provided with the necessary foundation to help them answer questions that are key to setting up a classroom and planning the year. Questions like: "What are preschoolers like?" "What do I need to know about each child?" "How do children learn?" "How do we set up and maintain an effective classroom?" "How will we build an intentional relationship with families of our students?" are given careful consideration.
The plan-do-review process is the centerpiece of the HighScope learning approach and the central element of the HighScope daily routine. It encompasses all the elements of active learning: materials, manipulation, choice, child language and thought, and adult scaffolding (support). In this approach, each individual child states in gestures or words a plan of action. The children then carry out their initial plans as well as other self initiated activities as they play alone or with others. Adults interact with the children to support and extend their activities. At the end of the day, the children reflect on , share, and discuss their experiences.
